What is the Ballot System?

The ballot system is a lottery-style process introduced by the Australian government to allocate Work and Holiday (Subclass 462) visas. With limited spots available and high demand from India, China, and Vietnam, the ballot ensures that the visa process is fair by randomly selecting candidates who meet the eligibility criteria.

Key Features of the 2024–25 Ballot System

• Ballot Opening Date: The registration process for the ballot system will open on 16th September 2024.
• Eligibility: This system applies only to first-time applicants from India, China, and Vietnam. Applicants from other countries participating in the Work and Holiday visa program will not be affected.
• Selection Process: Successful candidates will be randomly chosen from the pool of eligible applicants and invited to apply for the visa. Entry into the ballot does not guarantee a visa.

Eligibility Criteria for the Ballot:

To enter the ballot and apply for the Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 462), applicants must meet the following general requirements:

• Citizenship: Must hold a valid passport from India, China, or Vietnam.
• Age: Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the time of application.
• Previous Visa History: You must not have previously held a Work and Holiday visa for Australia.
• Location: You must be outside Australia when applying.

What About Existing Work and Holiday Visa Holders?

Applicants from India, China, and Vietnam who have previously held a Work and Holiday Visa can continue to apply for a second or third visa online through the standard process via ImmiAccount. The ballot system only affects first-time applicants.

Costs and Fees

• Ballot Registration Fee: AUD 25 ($16 USD).
• Visa Application Fee: AUD 635, payable if selected to apply for the visa.

Under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), up to 1,000 Indian citizens are allowed to apply for a Work and Holiday visa annually. This initiative strengthens ties between the two countries and provides more opportunities for Indian nationals to explore Australia.
