Do You Really Need OSHC While on a Student Visa?

Short answer: yes. If you are on a student visa in Australia, having Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is not optional. It is a condition of your visa and failing to maintain it can result in serious consequences, including visa cancellation.

In this blog, we explain what OSHC is, why it is required, and what happens if you let it lapse.

1. What Is OSHC and Why Is It Mandatory?

OSHC stands for Overseas Student Health Cover. It is a type of health insurance that international students must maintain while studying in Australia. The requirement comes from Condition 8501, which applies to most Subclass 500 visa holders.

This condition requires students to hold adequate health insurance from the moment they enter Australia until their visa ends.

OSHC is not just a recommendation. It is part of your visa compliance obligations under the Migration Regulations. Without it, you are considered to be in breach of your visa conditions.

2. What Happens If My OSHC Lapses?

Letting your OSHC policy lapse, even for a few days, puts you in breach of your visa conditions. The Department of Home Affairs may:

• Refuse your next visa application
• Cancel your current visa if the breach is discovered
• Request evidence of continuous cover during any application or review process

If you are applying for a new student visa or an extension, the Department will expect you to show uninterrupted cover from your original arrival date to the end of your intended stay.

3. Is OSHC the Same as Medicare?

No. OSHC is different from Medicare. Most international students are not eligible for Medicare unless they are from a country with a reciprocal healthcare agreement, such as the United Kingdom, Sweden, or Belgium.

Even if you are eligible for Medicare, you are still required to hold OSHC unless the Department has granted you an exemption in writing.

4. How to Check and Maintain Your OSHC

You can confirm your OSHC policy through your insurance provider or your education provider, depending on how it was arranged.

Make sure your policy:

• Starts from your arrival date in Australia (not the start of your course)
• Extends until your visa expiry date
• Is renewed if your visa is extended

Common OSHC providers include Bupa, Medibank, Allianz Care, ahm, and nib. Most providers offer online portals where you can extend or download your policy certificate.

FAQs

Do I need OSHC on a Bridging Visa?
Yes. If you held a student visa previously, the Department expects you to maintain OSHC while on a Bridging Visa A waiting for your new visa to be processed.

Can I use private health insurance instead of OSHC?
No. Private insurance does not meet the requirements of Condition 8501 unless the Department explicitly accepts it, which is very rare.

What if I already let it lapse?
You should renew it immediately and seek advice. You may need to provide a written explanation and supporting documents in your next visa application.
