Who can apply
The pathway is open to:
- Canberra residents who have lived in the ACT for at least 12 months and completed a professional or research doctorate at an ACT university.
- Interstate graduates who completed their PhD at an ACT university within the past two years.
- Overseas graduates who earned their ACT university PhD within the past two years and are currently living outside Australia.
Unlike standard nomination streams, this pathway does not require a Canberra Matrix points score and is free to apply for.
How the process works
Applications are handled through the Canberra Matrix, but PhD applicants do not need to claim points. Once registered, they will automatically receive an invitation email as part of each invitation round and must complete the online nomination form within 14 days.
Once approved, the ACT Government confirms the nomination on SkillSelect, triggering an invitation from the Department of Home Affairs to apply for the visa. The offer of nomination is valid for 60 days, so applicants should prepare their visa materials in advance.
