The sponsor must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. The relative must also be usually resident in a designated regional area and be at least 18 years of age.
This visa is valid for five years and is designed for individuals who are committed to contributing to regional communities. Importantly, visa holders must only live, work, and study in regional areas while holding the visa. This is monitored through regular reporting obligations and government data tracking.
Holders of the 491 visa may also have access to certain regional incentives, such as additional points in the General Skilled Migration (GSM) points test, priority processing of applications, and access to regionally-focused state nomination pathways. These benefits reflect the government’s commitment to making regional migration a viable and attractive option for skilled migrants.
Additionally, the 491 visa allows applicants to include eligible family members, such as a partner and dependent children, in the application. This makes it a family-friendly option for those seeking to migrate as a unit. Family members included in the application also receive full work and study rights and are subject to the same conditions relating to regional residency.
